The university was established in 2017 under the Krishnaguru Adhyatmik Visvavidyalaya Act, 2017. The university is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).

The university offers PhD programs in Assamese and political science, economics, education, and philosophy; M.A. programs in political science, economics, education, and philosophy; and major-specific BA, B.Com, and B.Sc. programs. Professional programs are offered, including B.Sc. nursing, GNM, BPT (bachelor of physiotherapy), and skill development programs in plumbing, electrician, fitter, and welding.
