Annamalai University is a unitary, educating, and a private college. It was established by the consideration of the farsighted and respectable hearted altruist and benefactor of letters the late Hon'ble Dr Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar of Chettinad, Kt, LL.D., D.Litt. He began a few schools, and at last, the University in 1929. Since its beginning, it has continuously attempted to understand the points of the honourable Founder Pro-Chancellor. After him, his celebrated child, Padma Bhushan Dr Rajah Sir Muthiah Chettiar of Chettinad, was the Pro-Chancellor from 1948 to 1984, and he carefully supported the development and advancement of the University. The University has had the remarkable favourable luck of having a progression of famous Vice-Chancellors to guide its fates. Amid the last eighty-two years the University has become quickly and has solidified its position as a unitary and private University with forty-nine Departments of Study and more than 3240 individuals on its instructing staff. Annamalainagar is now an occupied and undeniable University town, east of Chidambaram, the dwelling place Lord Nataraja. Annamalai University is a state university located in Annamalai Nagar, Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu, India. The university is spread across 950 acres in Chidambaram and offers courses of higher education in Arts, Science, Engineering, Medical, Management (MBA), Humanities, Agriculture, and Physical Education. The university was founded in 1929 by the entrepreneur Annamalai Chettiyar in the aftermath of the Montagu-Chelmsford Reforms. It was the first private university in India. It was taken over by Government of Tamil Nadu in 2013. The university also provides more than 500 courses through distance education. It was the first institution in India to offer postgraduate degree programmes in Applied Psychology, Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Botany, Bioinformatics and Law, Business Administration and Management (MBA) through distance education. The Directorate of Distance Education also offers programmes in Fashion Design, Textile Design, Interior Design, Hotel Management and Catering Technology, Retail Management, Twinning, Health Science, a Commonwealth Youth Programme, Yoga, Music, Fire and Safety, Pharmaceutical and Taxation.
