Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University was established by an Act of the Government of Uttar Pradesh in 2005, U.P. Act No.28 of 2005, and commenced on the 4th of January, 2006. It was created to address new challenges in the legal field and to reinforce the vision set forth by the establishment of the country's first National Law School. Initially named 'Dr. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law Institute, Uttar Pradesh,' the term 'Institute' was later replaced with 'University' through an amendment in November 2006, aligning it with other premier National Law Universities in India.

RMLNLU, also known as NLU Lucknow, is ranked 21^st among other NLUs according to NIRF 2023. The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs. The BA LLB Hons is its undergraduate offering, while the LLM is a one-year postgraduate course. The doctoral program is a Ph.D. in Law, spanning six years. Admissions for the BA LLB are based on CLAT-UG scores and for the LLM, on CLAT-PG scores.

RMLNLU provides scholarships to assist students in their higher education pursuits. Scholarships are available for SC/ST/OBC students from Uttar Pradesh and the Unreserved category with an annual income of less than INR 2 LPA, under various schemes from the Department of Social Welfare, Government of Uttar Pradesh. Additionally, RMLNLU extends financial aid to students under the UGC Scheme for “Free Education for Sports Medal Winners/Participants of National/International Events” and the National Handicapped Finance and Development Corporation (NHFDC) for students with disabilities.
