In 1956, V. Rangaswamy Naidu Educational Trust (VRET) founded the Coimbatore Institute of Technology. It is an independent engineering college with government funding. In 1987, it became autonomous. Prior to 1980, when the affiliation was moved to Bharathiar University, CIT was first associated with Madras University. After being recognized by the AICTE, the Institute is currently affiliated with Anna University as of 2001. Recognized by the UGC, the institute holds accreditation from the NBA and NAAC.

CIT provides eight Ph.D. research programs, six postgraduate academic programs, four five-year integrated M.Sc. programs, and undergrad academic programs.

Admission to CIT Coimbatore is determined by merit and the marks received in the entrance exam. Candidates must apply through a single window system, appear for the TNEA's counseling process for B.Tech courses, and take the university's entrance exam in addition to a personal interview for M.Sc. programs and the TANCET for M.Tech, MBA, and MCA courses.  The institute offers placement to students in various companies and offers scholarships to students in financial need. The school boasts a massive infrastructure that offers a range of amenities to students.
